Epic Edmonton Cocktails

Epic Cocktails 1Cocktails are a bit like mad science. You pick your ingredients, shake them, stir them, maybe add some smoke and sparkles, and voila – a creation emerges that is more than the sum of its parts. It can be as simple as one plus one equals two (like a classic gin and tonic), or it can be a multivariate equation with imaginary numbers and power functions (like my favourite cocktail of all time, The Old Cuban). This endless array of potential outcomes makes cocktails so much fun: the possibilities are as boundless as bartenders’ imaginations allow them to be.

Our little hometown Edmonton has quite the cocktail scene now. It crept up quietly over the past few years, with spots like Three Boars and Woodwork ploughing the first few furrows, allowing the likes of North 53, Chvrch of John, El Cortez, Mercer Tavern….just to name a few (and this list is by no means – and is not intended to be – exclusive).

We at Get Cooking added cocktail instruction into our mix last year, after we welcomed local barkeep Happy J Byrne. Since he joined us, we have taught how to Kitchen Partymake sangrias, beer cocktails, and whisky cocktails, just to give you a taste of his repertoire. We wondered and wished, though, that we could take you on a “who’s who” tour of Edmonton’s cool and groovy cocktail scene, by bringing you a virtual tour of these hotspots, minus all the traffic. That’s how Epic Edmonton Cocktails Friday Night Kitchen Party was born.

We want to emulate the social experience of visiting different cocktail spots, but it wasn’t really feasible to hire a bus and go from restaurant to restaurant! Therefore, our bartender Happy will be mixing, muddling, shaking and stirring up a series of cocktails inspired by and made famous by notable Edmonton cocktail hotspots, including Rostizado, Woodwork, North 53, El Cortez, and possibly others. These will include a Smoke and Oak Old Fashioned, which takes the classic Old Fashioned one step further by adding actual smoke, a La Bonita, which is a tropical rush of pineapple, cilantro, mescal and tequila, and a Passionfruit Margarita with – you guessed it – passionfruit and tequila.

More CocktailsCocktails are that much more delicious when enjoyed with intriguing food, so Chef Doreen Prei will be cooking up some tasting plates to keep your palate happy. We will commence with Tuna Tatar with fruity and spicy notes and caviar, Warm Lentil Salad, Spicy Merguez (Lamb) Sausage, Hot Smoked Duck Breast, Dark Cherries, Toasted Hazelnuts and Butternut Squash, and finish with Passion Fruit Creme Brûlée with Coconut Ice Cream, all alternating with our Edmonton-inspired cocktails.

If you’ve had the privilege of dining on Chef Prei’s creations, then you know what I’m talking about. If you have not yet, join us….we’ll start chanting “one of us, one of us, one of us” later if the mood strikes.

Epic Edmonton Cocktails will be on Friday, February 26 from 6-10 pm. Register here.
